I found this very neat app for Android: The "game" starts with an unidentified character in a dark wood (obviously Dante the pilgrim). The user can control the character's movements, and verses of the poem will automatically advance as the character does. The amazing part is that the virtual environment of the "game" is an adaptation of Gustave Doré's illustrations of Inferno. The app lets you skip around different areas of hell, and even examine Doré's unaltered work through an album of high-resolution images within the app. I thoroughly enjoyed being able to walk in the pilgrim's shoes. Particularly, I loved how it inverses the normal text-illustration relation by letting you see only the environment and then displaying the text only as you advance through the virtual world.
I firmly believe that first-time Inferno readers' should experience a traditional presentation of the text, but, for the seasoned Dante enthusiast, this certainly provides a refreshing new way to explore the canticle. Another excellent feature of the app is the "Allegory" button at the bottom of the screen, which leads to helpful notes, maps and even illustrations by other artists.
